DANCE STYLE DEFINITIONS Lyrical: A slow expressive type of jazz dance that incorporates ballet technique with the creativity
of modern dance. It is highly suggested that the student have ballet or jazz technique experience.
Tap: Rhythmic dance done with special shoes that make sounds.
Ballet
: Classical technique.
Jazz: Often done to pop music, jazz is a technical form of an ever-changing popular dance style. Dancers stretch and strengthen, and also work on
their turns, leaps and dance technique. Jazz is often seen in musicals and has as many different styles as teachers.
Hip Hop: A "street" style of dance often seen in music videos.
It is a less technical and high-energy style of dance that is done wearing street clothes and sneakers.
Acro Jazz: Various tumbling tricks are the spotlight in a jazz or lyrical
dance. The class focuses on the tumbling aspect and it is suggested that a dance technique class is taken in addition to the beginning acro jazz class. At the beginning/intermediate level, a ballet class is
required.
Musical Theater: Singing, acting and movement techniques are combined and performed to various musical numbers.
Turns and Technique: This is
strictly a technical class that works on jazz based turns and leaps, etc. It is required that the dancer has had approximately 2 years of jazz experience.
Power Ballet: For Ballet level
2 and above, this class focuses on strengthening using ballet technique in addition to various exercises.
Pointe: An advanced form of ballet technique done on special pointe shoes that allow
the dancer to go up on their toes. This class is by teacher recommendation only.
Pilates: A style of workout that uses various exercises to stretch and strengthen your abdominal core
muscles and other parts of the body.
Yoga: A stress relieving, ancient style workout which centers your mind while increasing strength and stretch.
